“Of Age”

I wrote this poem for my sister when she graduated high school.

Long ago, many years,
a miracle came to marvel.
Thrown were idle promises
with cheers and fat cigars,
Vows to avert morrow’s tears.

Birth since past
and ‘sook for granted.
Lonely streaks down toddler’s
muddied face. Young drops
reflect harbored admiration.

From child to woman,
the vow is unkept, along
small closets and siblings’ bedsheets.
Mascaraed face now glistens
with farwell hugs and many kisses.

And now all through,
only beginning. A fresh clean
slate. My vow still broken,
hearts become too, and tears
will spatter — some yours, most mine.
