From iOS to Android, part 2: ecosystem shock

Great post, Rob. I never thought of using NFC tags for personal use. I also had no idea they are so cheap!

We’ve struggled finding a good way to manage all our photos. They are fragmented across different devices and apps. I’ll have to check out Picasa again.

On the music side, we’ve been using Amazon music for purchasing (drm free) and storing files for a few years now and love it. It works pretty seemless across platforms and the prime playlists they recently added are a nice alternative to services like Pandora and Spotify. I highly recommend trying it if you haven’t.

The hunt for the perfect cell phone plan

Nice! We were paying $170/month with Verizon for way more voice, data and text than needed before moving to AUS. Luckily our contract ran out the day after we left so we had a clean break. I was super excited when Google announced the Nexus 4 last year–a beefy (at the time) unlocked GSM smartphone for only $250. Comparable unlocked phones were $500 to $800 dollars without a contract. With that, we’ve been able to pick up no contract SIM cards in each country we’ve visited for about $70/month with more than enough content. We’re definitely going with t-mobile when we get back. Especially with the recent free international data they just announced.

the Apple design esthetic

Not to rain on your Apple parade, but Logitech has been doing this with their mice for years. 😛 Regardless, I think it’s awesome. It’s one less thing to think about when interacting with the product.

Electoral Epistemology

Thanks Rob,
I can relate. Growing up a military brat in a deeply religious catholic family, I was always taught: Republicans – Good. . . Democrats – Bad.  We had a framed photo of Bush Sr. on our mantel right next to the wooden crucifix. I didn’t know (or care) why I was a republican, I just knew my family was and that made it right.

I first voted for Jr. in 2000. During 2001, I began to question my choice when it seemed he did nothing but take vacations.  It wasn’t until then, that I actually researched (a little late I know) what it meant to be a Democrat or Republican and what each party stood for.  What I found is that I don’t fit either.  Why can’t I be pro environment AND babies?  Can’t we help the poor AND maintain a strong military?

I get very frustrated with the politics of Red vs Blue and the dumbing down of complex issues into empty talking points.  Whatever the outcome of this election, the next president will need to motivate and mobilize the masses under a common goal if we’re going to see any progress.  Change will only come from cooperation between parties and citizen’s individual sacrifice.

Hate mail

I’m not going to point fingers and declare who’s poo stinks and whose doesn’t. In the interest of well informed voting, here is a link to the above video put in context.

Booooo! How can we expect an honest well-intentioned administration born of misinformation and fear tactics? Why can’t campaigns trust voters to make sound decisions based on facts, issues and policies? Why can I only comment in rhetorical questions?

Festivus, sort of

Awesome! You’ve inspired me to come out.
I too have made multiple schematics of our property.

Wow! That felt great! I feel so free! Thanks Rob.

Migratory Mark

Great List. It reaffirms my own decision to move here.
Little did I know, my future wife was living here and we would eventually buy a home just a stones throw from the Prince of Blades. (Although, as convenient as it may be, I do not recommend throwing stones at the Prince of Blades, nor any royalty of the cutlery family for that matter.)

I got all information i needed about it, since you can assure me the goodness of it, i will be purchasing it Like i said earlier, with additional $200 of your asking price. I wish i could visit you to take a look at it but due to my present Business engagement, i will not be able to come over there to look at it or offer you cash in person, and we have a private shipping company that will handle everything after you have your money in hand. As there are too many scams on internet as regards buying and selling with large bogus account, we need to protect our self, that is why our mode of payment will be via electronic cashier check. Echeck is simple, secured, legal, fast and it is setup to eliminate the stress of putting check in mail for days. You can read more on how i-versa check works at http://www.iversacheck.com and also to let you know more about its legitimacy. you must received cash from your bank before the shipping company will come to pick it up. All what you just need to do is to get a business versacheck paper and versaink, cost of $51.97. Once you have this, i will send the electronic check to your email for printing. You can then print and proceed to clear and cash the check at your bank. The cost of procuring the check paper and ink will be added to the bottom price. you can get business versa check paper and versa ink, at office depot, officemax, staples or any stationary store wal-mart shopping moll around. I will be waiting to read from you soon. get back to me as soon as you get the check paper and ink. you are not the only one i asked from, and first come first serve, buy the material today, to make it faster.
Thanks God bless you.

I write away had a suspicion after it had a fake address and even tho saying it was a safe way of sending money, its obviously a scam.

I have eleven checks from various scammers who are doing the same stuff everyone is describing here. Having advertised and sold numerous items on craigslist, and have seen this scam before, I was prepared when the emails started rolling in. I noticed that the only time they pursue the scam is when I put my email address in the body of the listing. A rookie scammer may do the standard craigslist reply but the email will contain a warning about moneygram/western union scams. Anyway, I string along the scammers in order to get them to overnight a bogus check to me. At this point I simply add the fake check to my collection and chuckle about them wasting their money to overnight the check to me. Thanks for all the experiences shared.

Ok,

Thanks for prompt reply, am really greatfull,am ready to purchase it now. The easiest way for me to pay for your item is thought Electronic Cashier’s Check, which is an E-Check, draw from (Bank Of America) and all what you need for the E-check is to buy Business Check Paper at Walmart, Office max, Office Depot, Stationery Store, Shopping Mall. And it cost $10. Once you purchase the business check paper. The echeck will be send immediately thought email, for you to have it printed. then you will proceed to your bank and deposit the check. I will wait for your bank to verify and clear the E-check before we proceed with shipment. As my Bank Operator informed me that the E-check will use two or three days before the check will clear at your bank. For you to know more about the echeck you can visit there website http://www.InstiCheck.com.

Get back to me ASAP to know if this helps

Electric hair clipper repair

Rob, I have the same clippers pictured in this blog. Oster classic with the red switch on the side. I was cleaning them up and the red switch fell out. I found the spring, but wondering if I’m missing another small piece, because when I reassembled the switch slides without much control or ‘click’ ing into place.
