Ed, you’re looking at the DRL mod. Did you not see the project photo link at the bottom of my article? Also, if you click on any of those photo links, they’ll take you to the gallery where you can find 800×600 images.

Zhuang, with the DRL disabled (the new switch I installed switched to the “off” state), I then have to turn my headlights on and off manually.
The DRL switch basically just allows me to disable or re-enable the DRL feature of the car.
Fog lights are not disabled by the this mod; they remain on. The DRL mod just gives me more control over my car by being able to turn off my lights when I want them off, even if that’s while the engine is running.

Well cool, Karen! I’m so glad I could help. I hope it was clean enough from that pic which side was the pin one side of the chip. Just for posterity’s sake, pin one of the chip is oriented away from that 4-pin connector which holds the cable.
Should be clear from the last picture. If you need any more help, give me a holler.

Handspring Visor Memory Upgrade
I have no way to answer that one. This is such a long-defunct product, you’d be very hard pressed to find answers anywhere. Particularly when it comes to memory architecture and the like.
I’d just be sure that the voltage rails are all the same, the pinouts are the same, etc. before swapping parts around. Once you’re sure you won’t “smoke” the part, then give it a try. What’s the worst that can happen?! 😮
If the unit doesn’t recognize the new memory module, you’re likely out of luck, as there isn’t anyone left to write you a custom driver. 🙂

So you will soon have a Visor Pro which requires a 900mAH lithium ion pack and you want to use AAAs instead?
First off, why? What’s wrong with the rechargeable pack? Regardless, keep in mind that a single new AAA battery is only about 1.5V.
According to the Technical Reference, the minimum voltage (“critical threshold”, page 19) required in the Pro is 3.5V. Below that and the Springboard turns off and likely other bad things too. So given that minimum, you’d need at least 3 AAA batteries in series.
The next concern is the current rating. Only alkaline are going to give you enough (1000mAh). In series, you don’t get any more capacity.

Ooo, sounds like a tricky project. I’ve always found that enclosures are the hardest part of a project. Modifying them even more so.
As to batteries, you have to at least match the capacity load of the target palm.

Yep, very doable indeed — with the right tools. And I agree with you. Paying to have the solder work done is the way to go. Some time ago, someone else such as yourself paid me to have a LCD flat panel connector repaired. I sent it to one of my contract manufacturers to have the work done with their automated solder machines.
If you are interested, I could help you with that process.

Dini, congrats to you for wanting to take this on. Modding stuff is fun! However, I should warn you that if you’ve never soldered before, your memory upgrade project will be a discouraging one to start with.
The memory chips are — if memory serves (pun intended) — about 48 pins or so. That’s a lot of pins to desolder from a PCB without damaging the board. When I did my upgrade, I had access to what’s called a solder reflow machine. It made the process fairly painless.
I personally wouldn’t attempt this mod with only a soldering iron.

Jack, yeah it would be possible to do. I no longer have access to the tools required to remove that SRAM chip and replace it with a new one however. I could put you in touch with a company that could do it for you however. I don’t know how much they would charge off-hand.

Patty, I appreciate your added thoughts. From what I understand, that’s the early heretical movement known as Gnosticism, which considered the flesh evil and to be avoided.
For what it’s worth, there are a lot of gnostic influences behind most of modern day Christian repression in regards to sexual dysfunction.

Julie, I think you planted a thought into my head, because last night I had the most vivid secret room dream! I found this hidden panel in a closet and behind it was a really long tunnel.
At the end of the tunnel was a large opening, like a chamber. And on every wall of the room was a door, 4 in all.
Then I woke up! What does it all mean? 🙂

I’m 5 years older than my sis (Melissa), but that poor kid didn’t get much brotherly love from me. Isn’t that terrible? Like a clod, I didn’t appreciate my sister until much later. We’re super close now, but not geographically.

I first read the phrase “Turtles All the Way Down” in a book by Stephen Hawking. According to the story, a big name scientist was giving a lecture on astronomy. After the lecture, an elderly lady came up and told the scientist that he had it all wrong. ‘The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.” The scientist asked “And what is the turtle standing on?”
To which the lady triumphantly replied: “You’re very clever, young man, but it’s no use — it’s turtles all the way down.”
I’ve asked several people what they think this story means, and everyone seems to have a slightly different take on it.
To me, it is a reminder that most scientific fact is really hypothesis that has not been disproved, and there is always the possibility that maybe the old lady is right.

I guess when I think of writers like Poe or Hemmingway or Salinger, I think… yeah, Tennis seems to be right. Sure, they were all talented, disciplined writers. But they seemed to be predisposed to a gloomier outlook.
Not saying that’s the only way to do it. Just seems like a pattern.
