Supporting the podcast arts

I have been listening to a movie review and pop culture podcast for years, called The Filmcast. It’s great and I highly recommend you give it a listen if you at all identify as a movie buff or film nerd.

I’ve been listening for years now and embarrassed to say that I haven’t given (regularly) until now, finally. Below is the letter I wrote them when I signed up…

Hey guys, this is really, really long overdue. I apologize for that. I’ve been listening to the show back before Dave and Devindra were married, before you guys split from Slash Film, even before Jeff joined the team. I’ve spent so long listening to you that I have that weird celebrity-culture feeling like I actually know you (minus the celebrities).

I adore The Filmcast. I depend on you guys to fill me in on why a movie sucks, or why I should give it a try, or what new shows to add to my queue. I love your passionate nerdom that leads to rambling 20-minute diatribes about cinema etiquette or trailer viewing protocol. I find your ideas and arguments to be balanced and often surprising.

But most of all, I – and all of the audience – are very privileged to share in your humanity: Devindra’s success with Engaget, Dave’s many cultural projects like working with the great Stepen Tobolowsky, Jeff’s careers from acting to newly published author (can’t wait to get my own copy of Best Summed Up!). I’ve listened to ups and downs. I’ve heard of your weddings and your growing families. I happen to share in a similar upbring to Dave. I find myself crying to the same beats as Jeff for the same reasons. I nod along to the reasoning of Devindra.

I can see how the above might sound creepy, but knowing you guys, it won’t. Just know how much your collective work has meant a tremendous amount to me over the many years. One of your recurring jokes is that the show surely won’t be around much longer. But look how long it has been around already! In a fractured and hyperactive media landscape as ours now is, that surely is an achievement. Looking forward to however much longer you guys keep this thing going.

Much respect and admiration,
Rob Lund
