The narcissists prayer

There’s a beautifully sussinct statement that is something of an adaptation of the serenity prayer for use with understanding narcissists.

That didn’t happen.
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, that’s not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
And if I did, you deserved it.

There’s so much there, but the gist is that it’s never the person’s fault, there’s always something or someone else that is responsible. More likely, you are high on that sequence list of responsibility. Worse, it’s likely your perception that is wrong.

This thought pattern all sounds familiar in this age of Trumpism and the new conservative cozying to relativism, doesn’t it?

I’ve often taken an adaptation of this adaptation to think about other hot button items in our new MAGA reality. For instance:

Vaccines

  1. There’s no such thing as a virus.
  2. If there was, they aren’t dangerous.
  3. If they are, people will build immunity if they just infect themselves.
  4. If not, virues are manufactured by our enemies.
  5. If not by our enemies, then by our own government.
  6. There’s no such thing as vaccine science.
  7. If there was, they aren’t effective.
  8. If they were, it’s because Big Pharma wants us to be sick to make money.
