The circuit shown is simply ¹Although “simply” is a matter of your perspective. a bridge rectifier circuit. The positive side of the incoming sine wave goes through D1 and D3, negative half cycle goes through D2 and D4.

Though #4 is straight up wtf.

I’m reminded of my favorite Asimov quote:
