Hehe, sorry. It’s my way of showing affection, honest. Melissa can vouch for this, can’t you Kiddo?» Posted By Rob On August 8, 2005 @ 10:58 pm
Hey all my beautiful friends!
Thanks for the cool comments. They sure mean a lot lately.
Jeff, you’re right, I should have made that more clear. The answer I was expecting, that burning bush declaration to go one way or the other, came much later.
But what I prayed for, I got in spades: peace.Lynda, the view up here is great!
Ang, that’s so cool about your youth work. That’s such a key time for kids, you know? I remember looking up so highly to my youth pastors. Great opportunities for good there.
James & Jules, you guys are such great encouragement. I love how sincere you kids are. π

Carl, you bring up a good point — is lying a sin? There are times when we withhold the truth to protect someone we love. Is that wrong?
I would agree that you just can’t apply a blanket command on that one. You have to judge each instance individually.
The adult world is not so black and white, though we would like it to be.

Wow, great, great thoughts you guys. That word, gratuity, is a very appropriate one, Patty. And Julie, you are so right about the power of any word when it’s negatively charged.
I still remember a day when I was with my buddy back in Oak Grove and his dad used the S word on him. Nope, not that one. He called him stupid to his face and in front of me. We were just kids, powerless to talk back. I remember looking at him, biting back his tears. That word was more scarring to him in that moment than any “swear” word that can’t be uttered on national TV.

I feel like I probably misrepresented myself. In no way am I a perfect saint when it comes to swearing (be it internally or vocally)!
I agree very much that out of deference to others, we should self-censor. That’s just good use of I Cor. 8.
Around certain college friends, I can be a sailor. But around others, I am sensitive to their convictions or sensibilities. So you’re right, profanities aren’t always said out of intense emotion. Sometimes they are just colorful expressions.
Speaking of the F-bomb, my very cool creative writing teacher in college once told us that in earlier times, the word was used in private between lovers only. Since then, it’s been dragged out of the bedroom. That’s too bad, because I believe that “private” words do have their place.

I knew you’d ask that! Hmm, if Nicholas is asking me, I’d say that yes it is. After all, if a man lusts in his heart, he’s lusted in real life.
But to an adult I’d say that the swear itself is not what “contains” the sin. letters formed together to make words hold no intrinsic value. The deconstructionist view is that language has no inherent meaning. We are the ones that layer upon our language abstraction and meaning.
What does the word love mean? To quote that Indian dude in Matrix Revolutions, “Karma is just a word, like love.”
So, all of that to say that any word we use “in vain” as Christians say (read: in anger, in disdain, in mockery, etc.) — that is a swear word. Christ, I believe, is concerned with the heart, or our intent. What’s behind our words? The language itself, the wording, is secondary.

Sensuality is not antithetical to faith
Couldn’t agree with you more, Patty. I love that not all of us fit neatly into a little man-made machine of Christianity. Encouraging for those of us “who are out”.

These are fair questions, Chris. My apologies for stereotyping. I must say that my thoughts on such things as this post and in my comment have changed since I first wrote them.
Thanks for your thoughts on the discussion.

Hmm, yes indeed. I heard another recent analogy that I hope is untrue. Went like this: “God’s a kid with an ant farm.”
However, I have to question my reasoning for hoping that isn’t the case. Is that arrogant of me to believe He wouldn’t derive pleasure for observing us like so many ants? Would it be arrogant of the ant to have that view of the kid?
Paul certainly has the humble view of an ant in Romans.

Malcolm in the (not quite) Middle
Thanks for the update, Malc. So do you have a new petition for the DVD? π

Great thought, Patty. I have never considered that aspect of the planks before. Wonderful allusion. π
Carl, I couldn’t agree more.
» Posted By Rob On April 29, 2005 @ 10:53 pm
Well, the more I think of it, Carl, the more I think that the most graceful thing for me to have done would have been not to initiate the debate. What did that accomplish, but a prideful sparring match?
I guess I have to just admit to myself that I used the excuse of “correcting” someone for the sake of clearing our collective Judeo-Christian name. That’s a bad motive.
It’s aggravating to me when someone takes such a polar stand, as you say, but is unable to backup their arguments.

Thanks, sis! Yeah, I was very pleased with it too. I’m feeling jazzed to keep this creative ball rolling!

Toot away. You were good. π

Julie, remember when I came to see your play at Odessa with James before you kids were married? It was Arsenic and Old Lace, I think.
You were really great. When the kiddos are older you should get back into theater!

No doubt! Problem is, most of my movies are in my head! Seriously, I got a lot of great ideas, but I haven’t shot many of them. One day, my friend.
I have a sweet script I’m working on now, but it’s going to require a significant electronics/mechanics project with a buddy of mine to complete. We’re going to build a sweet steadicam!

Wow, thanks for sticking it out, Patty! Yeah, the silhouette shot under the bridge is one of my faves too. That whole stage is probably my fave. That one is actually Acceptance though.

That’s cool that I made some sense, Julie. That post came pouring out late last night and sometimes that’s a “dangerous” way for me to write.
Thanks for your very thoughtful reply. I like that reference of yours. Is it a study Bible?
Carl, I completely agree about how reading the same passages over and over can sometimes dull the meaning. However, when I work with small kids who have that clean slate of a mind, it’s amazing how the fundamentals come back so quickly.

Good thoughts, everyone! Yep, his name is Ebenezer, Julie. You know, I didn’t even consider the “ownership” angle. I know that’s not the right word, but you know what I mean. π
SciFChick, if I ever do, you’ll be the first to know. π

Hmm, I’ll have to look up that song, Sar. I’m not too familiar with their music.
Funny that you should find this. I was just thinking these thoughts again recently.
…can’t remember where I heard this story — prolly a movie, Donnie Darko? — but it’s about a family dog who had crawled under a patio to die alone. It was such a sad image, that the animal didn’t seek out its family in that last moment. It sought solitude. Hmm, have to find the source of that one.
» Posted By Rob On October 28, 2005 @ 11:06 pm
Cool, thanks for the link, Carl. I posted the QOTD over there:
“I have always eaten animal flesh with a somewhat guilty conscience.” So said Albert from my nifty Wit & Wisdom calendar.

Carl, great points. I hadn’t quite thought of that — that sin works like an equalizer. Also, you are sadly correct. I tend to do my best writing late in the night. But my mind also wanders in strange directions. Sometimes I read what I’ve posted the following morning and shake my head in disbelief!
Julie, spoken like a true mother. π And you’re of course right, in every way.
I think what Carl said about seeing beauty in unexpected places is beginning to be very true for me right now too. I observe myself waffling from existential shock to dread, when it doesn’t have to be that way.
As Melissa said, both being fundamentally true means we interact with the world, being mindful of the two.

You just blew my mind, Melissa! And guess what? I did see I Heart Huckabees (finally!). Haven’t had a chance to write my thoughts on it. But you’re right, I guess I was influenced by the movie in this post without realizing it. It’s definitely that sort of film.

Hey Jim. I canβt remember exactly how mine mounted, whether it had a spring clip or not. I want to say it did not. But not really sure. Good luck!

Batty, I’m glad my howto could be of use to you! Good luck!

«« Back To Stats PageZhuang, great question. Yeah, I remember that schematic being very confusing. I got my info from the wiring manual, which I have linked at the bottom of that blog post. It’s in the “moon roof” section of the Matrix wiring manual, linked above in Reference Materials.
Look at page 2 of the PDF “036mr.pdf”. It says, “Ground : Approx. 12 volts with the ignition SW at ON position.” They’re talking about pin 2, which is the pin 2 I’ve drawn in my little diagram. From the PDF, it looks like that wire is black.
To be sure about all this, just get a voltmeter and measure this with and without the key turned to the “on” position. See if you have power in the “on” position and no power when switched “off”.
