Now Park’s do is cool. What would you think if I got one of those spikey things? Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to get some biceps like Park’s either. Maybe then Ms. Allen wouldn’t be so weirded out by my geekdom. 😀

Yep, Angela, just Star Wars stars all in one big room.
In the main convention hall with all the vendors, there was this really odd little booth showing a super low-budget tv show, and it appeared that there was one of the “stars” behind the booth. It was some sort of martial arts show. Very bizarre, I didn’t stick around.

Excellent thoughts, nb. You are indeed correct that Matrix borrowed heavily. But that didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the unique presentation of those old ideas.

Good points, all very true. There’s logistical problems with the allegation that The Matrix plagiarized Dark City. However, this post stands as mere criticism, however exaggerated, of the similarities between the films.
To be fair, even the Wachowski brothers have admitted obvious borrowing from other genres — especially anime, chop socky kung fu movies, and comic books. But more recently, there’s been other legal criticism to their script. See here for the case filed (and won) by Sophia Stewart:

No, Beauty & the Beast and Lion King were back in the hey-day of Disney. They started to go downhill with all that filler like Pocahontas, Mulan, and that one about the horses. Ugg. Oh and Tarzan.

Great comments! I should have stated more emphatically that I truly respect Moore and Spurlock for their ability to satirize, entertain, and hyperbolize. What I’m not really convinced of, however, is how much weight their films should carry in the political / social arena.
I’m not a great lover of guns, fatty hamburgers, nor W (sorry, Mom!). But I’m not sure I like the alternatives any more — extreme gun control, mandatory health food, & Kerry. I’m first and foremost moderate in just about everything. I like the occasional junk food, though I like to watch my diet and am quite athletic. I enjoy smoking an occasional cigar but generally abhor chain smokers, though I respect their right to destroy their health. I can’t stand guns personally and dare not contemplate pulling a trigger on another human being. But I respect others’ rights to arm themselves as they see fit within the law.
If I may, I’d recommend a very good balanced critique of Fahrenheit:

{rant warning}
Please be aware of the film’s MPAA rating. I used to review movies with all that info, but my personal belief now is one of passing that responsibility off to the consumer. And with the internet, there’s absolutely no reason why anyone can’t become fully educated and prepared for the product they purchase these days. It still completely bewilders me how so many people (present company excluded) find themselves in a movie that shocks them, and yet they didn’t research it ahead of time. “That dang Hollywood, filling my mind with evil!” Who’s fault is that?

Linden, you are dead on (pun intended) with these points! I couldn’t agree more and your examples of Babadook and Hereditary are keen too. I feel this new generation of horror, as you pointed out, has really taken the Shining model and run with it. The scariest reaches of the psyche reside already inside us.

Interesting perspective, Alex. I’ve got an American friend that grew up in Japan and yet he has an opposite opinion of yours.
Your perspective on the Japanese culture is really fascinating. A society’s art and entertainment is very telling of its fears and aspirations.
