That’s cool! We never had Big Wheels when we were kids but made it a point to ride friends’, cousins’, etc when we had the chance. I remember many a harrowing ride down a very steep street in town where one of our friends lived. Yep, riding Big Wheels down a city street…just another of the smart things we did as children! 😆

Great apartment! It looks very, very new! Are you going to have to share with a roommate or are you on your own now?
Love the graphics on the coffee cup. Alas I still have not developed a passion for the bitter bean.
Hope the church works out. To me that is the hardest part of moving, especially if you’ve left a good place behind.

Hey, my office is no longer purple…and it was a plum color not a dark purple! 🙂
My office is a nice beige color now. I do have some more obscure stuff in my office. Brian Despain and Phil Noto prints, Richard Sala original comic art pages….but I display all with pride cuz its just a part of what makes me who I am!
And Jimmy…I’d have to paint the walls a dark purple FIRST and THEN hang up the posters! After maybe adding some black lights and a few velvet Elvis posters! 😛

The site is looking pretty sweet! Glad you’re back in the mix. I’m excited about the move to Colorado. There was no way in the hot place I would ever travel to the heat of Texas but I love Colorado so maybe Jimmy and I could do a road trip sometime…that would be too cool! I hope you’ll love it there.

The whole lying thing reminds me of the situational ethics debate and Christians like to try to stand back and say “never lie”….”never swear”….I guess the truth is that those things are “sin” and we should strive not to do them but that God also understands and forgives when we do.

Exactly Julie, that’s what I said in my first post when I defined lusting….all lusting, not just sexual, involves entertaining, mulling over, and eventually obsessing about things that we should not be focusing our energies on.
Blending this in with the Malcolm post I think this is one of the areas where he has good intentions but misses the point. Anxiously awaiting Star Wars, or any movie, book, etc. and being excited about it and thinking/talking about it does not mean its a sin or is more important than God. It simply means you are excited about it. Now if you sell your children into slavery so that you can go see it multiple times a day then yes, you may be sinning!

The whole question is an interesting one as I’d probably tell a kid “yes” even though I’m not really convinced its a sin, just to hopefully keep him from walking around with a string of obscenities in his head all day. That brings up the whole question of lying for the kids own good! 🙂

I do believe, however, that there actually is some power in language and the way it is put together. Although this has something to do with the meaning that we’ve placed behind it but I also believe there is power there. In America we have a habit of leaching all meaning and power from language as we use words like ‘love’ to describe our feelings for music, pets, tv shows, other people etc. The ancient languages that had many more than just one word for things were so much more meaningful and powerful. And there’s no denying that certain people have a way of stringing words together in such a way that it moves us beyone measure.

I’ve argued with many a person about the whole cussing issue. I agree that intent has alot to do with whether or not the words coming out of our mouths are sin. For the sake of others around us I believe that we should try to refrain from cussing out loud. I’m not sure how I feel about the whole thought thing though. I don’t believe a fleeting lustful thought is a sin as Jesus had to have those in order to be tempted like us but didn’t sin. Lusting to me involves more willful entertaining of thoughts. So is the unbidden cuss word in your head a sin or only when you purposefully put together a string of venemous obscenities in your head in a fit of anger or frustration? I also don’t really understand why it is that it feel so good to swear. Those words just seem to fit in your time of need! 🙂 My favorite author Neil Gaiman has said that the “f” word is his favorite word…he’s not using it in anger but as an expression of joy or as an adjective and at times I’d have to admit that the word just seems perfect. Sorry, I’m an imperfect saint, but I have to admit it! Anyway, just wanted to put my 2 cents in!!!

Nice thoughts and I agree totally. You’ve brought up another aspect of the argument. Not only is Malcom’s position completely wrong…and I believe it is and is a misuse of scripture…but his methods of trying to express Christ to others is an ineffective way to do it. As you said, intimacy is the key….and I don’t recall any relationship that I’ve ever had in which people considered being beat over the head as intimacy.

I was feeling guilty about jumping into this discussion without reading the Star Fast site so I popped over there and gave it a read. Unfortunately it is as I suspected, a blanket statement misusing scripture to infer that anyone who derives entertainment from this..or by default ANY…form of entertainment that is not blatantly biblical is in some way sinning and putting their own self interests before their love of God. I’ll be the first to admit that at times I put worldly things, my own self interest, etc before God. I’m human and striving to grow to become the person God created me to be. However I believe that God gives men and women the talent and creativity to make exciting movies, write wonderful novels, create fantastic works of art etc and that it is not, in fact, wrong to enjoy these things….like everything else they need to be held up to the Word and judged. I’m not defending Star Wars as being godly or ungodly, that is something that can be debated forever and turn foolish. What I’m defending is every believers right to live free of the condemnation that is inherent in the insidious idea that everything not overtly Christian is somehow sinful. That is an immature, childish, baby-Christian thing to believe. It is an attitude that protects us while we grow up in Him but is not where we should stay. Staying at that level of maturity hinders our ability to grow in our relationship with God and with our fellow man. It also makes us less than effective witnesses to those around us.
And lest you think this I want to be clear that I am in no way saying that we water down the Word of God, etc. I believe in absolutes and believe there are many things Christians who are doing things that they shouldn’t be doing and are somehow justifying those things but the fact is that there is no truth to your maxim that entertainment=sin. I encourage you and others who have signed up on your site to continue to be bold in your stand for God but to spend some quality time praying and seeking God’s heart on these issues.

Its not only true that we should have childlike faith, but we should endeavor to open ourselves to that childlike awe of God and all the wonders of his creation. Not always easy to do in the hustle and bustle of the world. That’s why I really love Spring and Autumn…for me those are the 2 times of year that, without conscious thought, my spirit and mind open up to all the wonder that is around me and consequently I am much more thoughtful about the things of God. Wish I could capture that openess and have it all the time.

I find the same thing happening as I get older and have more moments of introspection. There are alot of sayings that seem trite and cliched but are no less ‘true’ because of that. Let’s be honest, there are times when hearing the same scripture or passage again and again can cause it to lose some of the awe that it maybe inspired in you the first time you heard it. That doesn’t make it any less true or powerful.
I think that this is where the Holy Spirit comes into play as the reminder to us of the things we need to hear, when we need to hear them. That, I believe, is where the importance comes in to the idea of hiding scripture in your heart. There are times when we really need to *get* a certain message and that is when these sayings, or memes as it were, can come alive to us and have a deeper meaning.
I hope that deep down you always know that you are loved and don’t doubt your uniqueness. Blogging has pointed out to me even more that I am my own person. There are people who share similar interests and who also dislike some of the things that I like. We all have our differing views, opinions, things that inspire us, things that lay us low. We all have our own unique way of looking at things…even when we agree there are still shades of difference. We all have our secret vices and private dreams. And ultimately we each have a very unique relationship with our Creator.

I believe its a combination of spontaneous romance and hard work that make it possible to have ‘one true love’ and that the giving of yourself wholely to another, while truly sacrificial at times, is one of the key ingredients to finding those romantic moments even years into a relationship.

Seriously though, I think occasionally self-evaluation is good as long as you also include looking through the lense of the Word while doing the examination.
I don’t know if you really need something to evaluate your life’s worth….I think Someone already has done that for you…but it would be fun to have a set up like this with bells and whistles….maybe also with the occasional burst of steam coming out of it and the occasional spastic movement that would lead one to believe that the machine was about to blow!

I think both are true, especially from a biblical point of view. Matthew 15:19 “For out of the heart proceed wicked thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, calumnies.” There is no denying that our base human instincts make us all the same and give all of us the propensity to live selfishly to the damnation of those around us. Lets not forget that we are not exactly what God created in the first place. Our disobedience and the entering in of corruption make us much more like #2.
#1 is closer to the truth of who God created us to be. As humans with a free will we can choose to rise above the #2 description and become better, more enlightened, and more giving people. Some people do this without a relationship with God and they can do some very wonderful things. With God we obviously have the opportunity of becoming exactly who he made us to be. Unique individuals with callings, purpose, talents, etc that are all our own.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve really begun to see the beauty in others. As a shallow example, I used to have a pretty set idea of what type of woman I thought was beautiful. I often comment to Mary about certain women that I think are really beautiful who do not even come close to fitting the worlds idea of beauty. I can see unique features and appreciate how beautiful we all are. And when the person is beautiful inside it really does shine out…I didn’t see this as much when I was younger.
I think I like art from both points of view as well but my favorites usually turn out to be of the #1 variety.
