The blog phenomenon is indeed an interesting one. It gives us glimpses into people’s lives that we might not otherwise have and that is both a good and bad thing.
I enjoy being able to read daily excerpts from my favorite author and from artists whose work I admire. Seeing their daily creative process is inspiring and gives me a connection with their work that I might not have otherwise had.
I also like reading the thoughts of my friends and people I don’t know well but can get to know through the internet.
Blogging should not replace intimate conversations but it does give us the ability to discuss things that we really want to talk about that may not come up in normal conversations.
Blogging can also be very self-serving. I don’t post things because I think that I’m so great that others MUST care about what I have to say. I post because there are so many things that I enjoy and I figure that SOMEONE probably shares these interests and sharing my favorite books, movies, music, etc. may prompt others to share theirs with me and open up an even bigger world of discovery for me.
Plus it is just fun. It exercises the creative muscle to some degree without demanding a huge time commitment.
Sorry your mom won’t post..but it is cool that she isn’t afraid of the computer!

I got a good laugh out of Julie’s post….the print is so small on these comments that as I was scanning it I misread the word ‘tucks’ and got an “OH MY!!!” moment!!!

Although your post, and Trillian’s, were very entertaining to read I feel guilty getting a chuckle out of the whole thing. I guess, however, that this is probably the only attitude to have…to not take it too seriously. I do feel bad though. Ultimately it will be a great story to tell at your wedding reception! 🙂

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I’m not sure if I was given the choice that I would erase some memories….I might go back in time and make some different choices, but in many ways I treasure the *memories* of even the worst moments in my life as they are like road markers on my path thus far, reminding me of where I was and where I’ve been. Memories of sin may be something a Christian should want erased, but lets be honest, some sinful memories are quite pleasurable and maybe not having those memories would lead one back into the same wrong behavior. Its an interesting concept to think about. I know I wouldn’t want to erase any of my former heartbreaks, even though I’m happily married now. I wouldn’t want to forget really boneheaded things I’ve done as they make really entertaining stories to tell people. I’ve seen so much beauty but its probably only beautiful due to the memories of ugliness that I’ve seen.
Enough pontificating, I really enjoyed this movie. I found it humorous, interestingly filmed, and also somewhat sad. There should be more movies like this.

Another excellent independent film/documentary about elementary school children is “Spellbound”. Its out on DVD and follows several young children in their quest to win the national spelling bee. Sounds very dull but this is a touching and funny movie. You really find yourselves pulling for all the kids and are sad as they get eliminated. I highly recommend this, you will not be disappointed.

Sounds like a neat film. What impresses me the most about the idea is that there is a middle school in America that bothers to take the time to try to get kids to fathom the Holocaust.
I’ve always felt that there is a danger in the passing of time of Americans forgetting what happened in WWII. I think ‘Saving Private Ryan’ went a long way towards reviving our consciousness of what happened during those times.
I’ll have to check this out…is this at the theatre now or out on DVD?

Another very interesting movie with Patricia Clarkson in it is “The Station Agent”. It is essentially a movie where 3 people just sit and talk but Mary and I loved it.

The movie is even more touching when you know more about why he made it. Its really short but I think you’ll find it worthwhile. As I said, I have this movie for those of you blog readers who live here in town. Its worth checking out!

This movie is amazing. I rented it right after it came out then ended up going and buying it. The music is indeed incredible (my fav author, Neil Gaiman, is a huge Merritt fan btw).
Katie Holmes does an amazing job portraying a girl who so desperately wants to reconnect with her family. The casting in this movie was perfect. I love the way that they shot the ending sequence in this film. I won’t ruin it for anyone but it is very poignant and powerful. Every so often I’ll grab this and throw it in the DVD player just to watch the last 5 mintues.
Have you watched the extras on the disk? The making-of feature is very touching as the writer discusses the real life inspiration for this film.
This is a 5 star film!

As I said somewhere I believe in the comments on my blog lately regarding this subject, I’ve known a few people who took time off to just go away alone and do some introspection and they were much the better for taking the time. I would encourage you to do this if you’re really feeling the urge strongly. If you can take off work for awhile and do it what do you have to lose?
I noticed in Barnes&Noble last night, while we were waiting for Batman Begins to..er, begin, the writers of WAH wrote a book called Captivating which is supposed to be a WAH for women.
