like cats and dogs: a taxonomy

Nah, I’m too much of an animal lover. Taxonomy was the word of the day provided by Ms. Baker a while ago. It’s such a cool word!

photo gallery flux

Good luck, Sabrina! Although I’ve moved on from Gallery 2 to NextGen Gallery. Always in flux, I guess. You can see its galleries on my /Photos tab.

NextGen is a WordPress native plugin, and quite full-featured. It uses the same WordPress database, so it’s just a LOT easier to manage. Check it out, it might be all you need.

Bruce, the remote is (as I understand it) just an alternate uploading mechanism. I believe it’s java-based too. It won’t help what you want to do.

You need to turn on the URL rewrite rules. Take a look at Boolean’s discussion above. Also, make sure you check out the WPG2 forums where there are whole threads on the matter.

But here’s the quick bottom line for what you want to do: make certain that you Gallery2 install directory name is different than URL rewrite rule that you ultimately want (“/photos”)

Yep, that’s the page. There’s a lot of good help at those forums too! Hmm, did you make sure you validate your settings in the WPG2 plugin options?

Make sure you log into your gallery while embedded. Then go to the URL rewrites and set the embedded .htaccess.

Oh, but Gallery does Iceman. You made me double-check, but I do indeed have nested albums. The nice thing about Gallery2 over Coppermine (in keeping with the post) is that Gallery retains the human-readable file hierarchy which exactly mirrors the web presentation of those albums.

For instance, I have the following nested album setup on my gallery:

Projects | Matrix | Mirror Upgrade

And looking at the server, the file structure is exactly the same, with only the original image files in all those directories. No excess clutter or thumbnails. Very, very nice. Coppermine has one big flat root directory for all albums. Blecht!

Maybe with Gallery2, your desired feature has already been implemented?

vain numbers

Hilarious. The famous Bill McNeil is now on the board. I hope he visits often!

Ah, poor Mel.  But good tactic on increasing your count!  Just think, you’re still ahead of Mom!

Photo gallery update

Yeah, no joke. They’re all way too complicated.  But I’m making this one work for now.

WordPress needs to come out with a better, slimmer gallery addon.  Something like Flickr, just lean and simple.

aesthetics overhaul

Thanks, all!

Jimmy & Jules — thanks for noticing the embedded word in the banner. I’m pretty proud of my Gimp work on that. 🙂

Mark — brilliant philosophizing on the hero’s journey. I knew I could count on you.

Mel — nice three-word comment. Sheesh, take some time off. 😉

Wow, give a teacher the day off, and she over-thinks everything!

Yes, indeed, a passage from the dark to the light. Mark could elaborate on how this is significant in the superhero’s story arc.

thoughts on Brokeback

Karen, isn’t that like saying:

I wonder if Jesus would go see movies?

The question assumes the answer a priori.

» Posted By Rob On February 1, 2006 @ 2:03 pm

Is anal sex really the moral issue? Or homosexuality? I’d say that the presence of vaginal sex in movies for quite some time is enough cause for concern. For that matter, I wouldn’t want my young kids exposed to a heterosexual teenage couple walking down the street, smoking and cuddling.

The problem I see with applying a human litmus test to morality is that the line is never very clear. Who decides which sins are worse than others? For instance, what would be worse than homosexuality? Rape? Murder? And what’s just below it? Incest? Premarital pregnancy? Abortion?

How many times have people felt this: “Yeah, my kid screwed up, but at least he’s not gay.” What are parents of gay children supposed to do with that? I think it communicates that there are some sins that will never be redeemed (in human eyes).

Electric hair clipper repair

So the coil itself is broken? If so, I’m afraid that transformer is toast.

» Posted By Rob On January 25, 2021 @ 11:22 am

Hey Eric, sorry for the late reply. The screw that I had adjusted was one that held the transformer together. There’s obviously a pretty significant current surge to throw your GFCI plug!

» Posted By Rob On April 30, 2019 @ 6:35 am

Yeah, sometimes a dead battery will not work in bypass mode like your symptoms imply.

» Posted By Rob On December 6, 2016 @ 10:07 am

Hi John. I’ve replaced these clippers some time ago. But I can’t remember there being a very noticeable “click”. The transformer sometimes will make a loud click when it engages and the blades are positioned just right. Is that what you mean?

» Posted By Rob On June 21, 2016 @ 10:37 pm

My first thought is warranty! Just replace it. Because if you attempt to fix yourself, you’ll just void it anyway.

» Posted By Rob On April 22, 2016 @ 6:12 pm

I’ve found that usually it’s an issue of connection. Do you have a voltmeter? Make sure those wires are all making continuity.

» Posted By Rob On April 9, 2014 @ 1:51 pm

I bet the transformer is fused. Check it for melting or smoked areas.

» Posted By Rob On October 21, 2013 @ 9:47 am

Ron, I’ve emailed you my address…

» Posted By Rob On February 8, 2013 @ 12:59 pm

I’m not a professional. But I have worked on others’ clippers over the years. I could take a look for you, but I can’t guarantee results.

» Posted By Rob On February 2, 2013 @ 10:38 am

Thanks, Mickey, and good for you for trying to fix them. But be careful when you try shorting out the switch. That’s all AC 115V in there!

Not sure what to tell you, if you lost a part. If the transformer won’t kick in at all it could be:

1) Loose connection to the transformer
2) Bad connection from the switch

If all is connected properly, you should hear that transformer hum. Do you have a multimeter to measure the voltage?

» Posted By Rob On March 30, 2012 @ 4:38 pm

Clif, I would recommend the following:
1) Grease up your clippers.
2) Stop clipping your wife’s provates. Might be dulling the blades.

» Posted By Rob On March 22, 2011 @ 6:03 pm

Smitty, it’s been so long I forget what that part looks like. I might be able to help you if you send me pics. I’ll send you an email.

» Posted By Rob On August 25, 2010 @ 10:40 am

It might just be some other mechanical parts inside the clipper that loose now and vibrating. Feel around and see if anything is loose.

» Posted By Rob On September 3, 2009 @ 7:15 am

Hmm, it depends, Pablo. If you’ve already cleaned it and tried loosening and tightening that screw, that’s the extend of what I did to fix mine. Beyond that, you might have to replace the transformer, which could be hard to find. That’s something that I could help with finding, but it might not be all that cheap.

» Posted By Rob On September 3, 2009 @ 5:26 am

Alex, can you send me some pictures of what you have? I’ll send you an email too…

» Posted By Rob On July 28, 2009 @ 5:56 pm

Yeah, your transformer could be dead.  If you want to send it to me for repair, I can take a look for you.
